Learning Skills Essential to Every Job

Every job seems to get more complicated and more difficult. We are asked to do more with less. Or are we asked to learn more in a shorter amount of time. As technology becomes more advanced, everything seems to speed up.

Many people may feel overwhelmed by everything they have to do and how much they have to learn. Diversity is key. Many times we have to think outside of our normal routines and practices to find new ways to learn what we need to know.

These learning skills are essential to learning and creating a successful career.

Critical thinking

New information needs to be analyzed and compared to previous knowledge in order to be successfully retained. That is where critical thinking comes in.

This skill uses analysis, classification, description, evaluation, and problem-solving to help people consolidate new information in the brain.

Creative thinking

Learning also takes creativity. While critical thinking is essential, creative thinking helps people innovate and imagine.

They are able to think of various solutions and possibilities. They are able to improvise and take on new perspectives. They are able to take old and new information and create something new or design some new way of using the information.


There are some people who can work in isolation, but humans are social animals. Most people need to know how to work with others in order to learn new skills.

Collaboration helps people practice brainstorming, decision-making, leadership, goal setting, compromising, time management, and allocating. These are skills needed to work with others and learn in groups.

Strive to learn

In order to learn, people need to have the drive and motivation to continue learning throughout their lives. They need to think of learning as a continuous process that takes time and energy.

When people learn, they often make mistakes or need guidance. In order to receive that kind of help they need to be able to communicate: to give and receive feedback.

In many of today’s learning environments, people not only need to know how to communicate face-to-face, but also using technology.

Detail oriented

Learners who have organizational skills and are able to focus on details as well as see the big picture will have an advantage when it comes to learning.

Making connections

Learning does not happen in isolation. The most effective learning occurs when new skills can be connected to the real world.

When learning happens in relation to a learner’s actual needs, it will be more relevant to them.

Learning agility

People who are learning agile can adapt to new situations and learn skills outside their main skills area.

Learning agility enables them to ask certain questions and find the answer they need when they need them. They develop a comfort in the unknown and are able to accept new challenges.

Know yourself

When you start the learning process, it can be helpful to know how you learn. Some people are auditory learners. Some are more tactile. Others are more visual.

When you know how you learn, you are better able to learn and retain new information.

Get feedback

Knowing when to ask for help, how to ask for help, and whom you should ask for help are excellent skills to have in order to learn new information.

Excellent feedback and assistance can take your learning to the next level and help you overcome any hurdles or put you on a better path if your learning process has gone off track.


A learning skill that will help the entire learning process is taking the time to slow down and reflect. Racing from one learning task to the next might seem like it speeds up the learning process, but it can actually be counterproductive.

This type of schedule does not leave time for reflection. Making time for reflection allows learners to consolidate learning, receive feedback, and adjust goals.

Stay focused

A learning skill that is important to consider is focus. When you lose focus on your goals or you distract yourself with too many goals, the learning process slows down.

It is realistic to have around 2 goals for your learning. Any more than that and it becomes too overwhelming.


In order to learn, it can be important to know how to teach. When you are learning something, it can be helpful to think about it as if you were going to teach it to someone else.


Learning is a process. It comes with mistakes and difficulties. In order to learn, people will need to practice patience. Learning new things takes time. And even though people may wish they could learn things by osmosis or in just a few hours, most learning takes much longer and requires more struggle.

Patience will help learners continue on and learn skills they need to learn. 

Learning can be a daunting task. But when people keep these learning skills in mind, they will increase their chances of learning things better and faster.
